We are currently knee-deep in a fashion print renaissance. From the painterly tees and sheaths swanning down the city's grad show catwalks, to Miu Miu's psychedelic homages to Ossie Clark and Prada's resurrected 50s prints, fail-safe ditzy florals are being nudged out to make room for something a little bit more, well, unexpected.
Thus some nude ladies found their way on Keira Knightley's collar at a premiere -
And a whimsical beach scene played out on Carey Mulligan's full skirted cotton dress in Cannes:
What links these two looks? Their utter individuality. That is what the new prints are all about. But as you can imagine, this artisan quality comes with a hefty price tag. You could always rummage around the vintage shops looking for a one off, that, my vintage devotee friends, is a given. But if you want to really out-do yourself, and especially if you've got an creative streak and you're handy with a sewing machine, you'd be better of having a go at creating your own printed garment at a fraction of the price.
Me? I'm currently printing some line drawings of old fashioned bicycles on muslin, which I intend to fashion into a light and airy summer frock. I'll let you know how that goes. But if you have no experience of printmaking and you'd like to give it a try, you're in luck, as this weekend Atlantis Art are hosting a free screenprinting workshop with artist Jonna Saarinen.
Taking place on Saturday 5th June at the new Atlantis Art premises on Hanbury Street in East London, the session will you give you the opportunity to pick up simple and effective printing techniques with an introduction to basic printing materials and initial preparation. You'll discover how to expose screens, the process of printing in professional studios as well as colour separation and other techniques. It's free, so it's got to be worth a shot!
Screenprinting with Jonna Saarinen. Saturday 5th June from 11am-3pm at Atlantis Art, Britannia House, 68-80 Hanbury Street, E1 5JL. Free admission. Find out more here
