We had a blast at ATP vs The Fans this weekend. It was held at Butlins in Minehead, which meant that instead of roughing it in a tent, we got to stay in a cool chalet, complete with living room and kitchen.
We caught an amazing array of bands, from the Gallic delights of M83, the wildly energetic !!! and The Mae Shi to the achingly beautiful Grizzly Bear, the brilliant Beirut and the downright fun Devo. The crowd were a fun, friendly mix of clued-up music hipsters and full on muso geeks.
Highlights included a rare performance from Young Marble Giants (minimalist DIY art pop outfit formed in the 70's and one of Rough Trade Records first signings) and Sleep, the legendary stoner doom metal band from the early 90s, back for a never to be repeated reunion gig.
After watching the bands, you could head off to the cinema to take in a movie, shake a leg at the Crazy Horse club or watch how quickly you could make your money disappear at the arcades. Or there was always the beach.
Despite a bleak weather outlook for the weekend, the sun decided to join the party after all and we celebrated by throwing on our Laura Ashley style floral tea dresses and lounging in the sun making new pals and enjoying ice creams. Hannah also picked up some blinging marvelous rings from the on-site shop, as seen in the picture above. Yet another reason why we really do ♥ ATP.
